by David Feare on 2017-02-11T12:07:00-08:00 in Library Stories | 0 Comments

To tell you more about who we are, we will periodically post a Staff Spotlight on people who work in, or with, the Library. This Staff Spotlight focuses on Sarah Mendez, who is the first member of our Student Research Fellows program! This is a pilot program in which the Library trains students to work as research fellows to support faculty research within the SHHS Center of Excellence. Sarah is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health with an emphasis on Health Promotion.

What's the most California thing about you?
I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, so the most Bay thing about me is that I unapologetically use the term "hella" in everyday language. I hella love the word "hella." Also, to be clear, it is not "hell of" or "helluva" or whatever people not indigenous to the Bay Area or Northern California like to say.

What is your preference, print or e-books?
I don't think I have a preference but I do think e-books and e-readers are pretty awesome. I'm not one of those people who have to hold an actual book in my hand to enjoy reading.

What book did you like as a kid? How about now?
As a kid, I loved The Berenstain Bears! Every time I see a Berestain Bears book on sale now I pick it up so if I ever have kids they can read them. Now, I like non-fiction books like Fast Food Nation or I like to read plays.

What is one book you'd want with you if you were stranded on a desert island?
I think I would like a copy of the Christian bible with me. I imagine I would have nothing but time to analyze the text and finally figure out what God has been trying to say to us this whole time, if anything. Actually, I wouldn't mind a copy of all the major religions' "bible" to do a bit of cross referencing to see how much they all have in common after all.

Superhero power you'd want to have?
I'm not sure if this exactly qualifies as a superhero power but I'd like the results of the "Limitless" drug. I imagine a person could do some rather super things if they are operating at such a high level.

What's on your bucket list?
It is my hope to see a baseball game at every MLB stadium. I have already been to a game at all 5 stadiums in California. This summer my husband and I will be visiting some friends in Colorado so we will get to check Coors Field off the list.

If you were to write a book, what would it be about?
I think I'd like to adapt one of my favorite albums into a script. I think Superchick's album Beauty from Pain has some very powerful messages that would translate well to a musical script.

Name a movie you'd like to see made that's based on a book?
Since I am more of a music/theatre geek I'd like to see a movie adapted from the musical American Idiot which was based on Green Day's album of the same name.

What's the best advice you've gotten?
There is no amount of money that feels better than true love.

How do you define success?
Happiness.

If you could go anywhere for a month, where would you like to go?
I would go back to Okinawa and continue seeing the island with my husband. I recently went there for a week at Christmas time to visit my husband who is stationed there and it simply was not enough time. Also, I really just want to be anywhere that he is. Sweet, I know.....
