Gothic & American Ghosts
Module 2 Research Assignment:
Find a primary text produced at approximately the same time (within 5 years) as one of the readings this week. For your 500-word write up, quote or describe a relevant section/word/detail of the primary text and explain how it interacts with one of this week's literary readings. What does the primary text help to reveal about cultural beliefs or associations of the period, or how does it inflect our understanding of a word or concept? What context does it provide for the piece of literature? How might it change, slightly or significantly, the way we interpret the literary text?
The following are a selection of images of ghosts found from the Library of Congress.
The following are articles from the Library of Congress's newspaper digitization project, Chronicling America. Please note that the articles are similar to microfiche or PDFs in that they are images. In some cases the quality of the source material is aged, faded, or wrinkled which can make some portions difficult to read. Use your mouse to zoom and pan through the image to read the full text.
